Dundee leads Scotland in launching new cancer research centre

Dundee becomes Scotland’s first link in a unique chain of Cancer Research UK Centres that are being launched across the UK. The launch of the Dundee Centre coincides withWorld Cancer Day.
These new cancer centres will draw together world class research and medical expertise to provide the best possible results for cancer patients nationwide.
As the first centre in Scotland, the Dundee Cancer Research UK Centre will help set the pace for national and international progress in bowel, breast and skin cancer. It will build on Dundee’s world class research in the areas of radiotherapy and surgery by focussing on new highly advanced image-guided surgical techniques. The Centre will also lead to the development of an international hub for research into the most serious type of skin cancer (melanoma), making new discoveries in basic cell biology then helping to translate those into new treatments.
Collaboration is the key to the success of the Centre which will enable researchers who do not normally work together to exchange ideas and information more easily. It now brings together researchers and support from University of Dundee, Cancer Research UK and the NHS Tayside.
Professor Irene Leigh, head of the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and chair of the board of the new centre, said: “This is a very exciting development for cancer research in Scotland. The new centre will help us bring together a variety of researchers and clinicians to collaborate and work together to improve the lives of cancer patients across Scotland. By building closer links between scientists and doctors we want to increase the pace of research, leading to improved treatments for patients."
The Centre aims to be a world leader in developing treatments tailored to individual cancer patients based on understanding the biology of the disease and how that varies among patients.
Cancer Research UK already supports research in Dundee but is set to increase its contribution to over £7.5m a year to help develop the Centre.
Professor Peter Downes, Principal of the University of Dundee, said: "The award of Cancer Centre status is the combination of years of effort building world class basic research into the underlying mechanisms of cancer alongside the clinical research needed to translate new knowledge into improved treatment of disease. It exemplifies our strategy to ensure research has a positive impact on society.”
Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: "Huge progress has been made in beating cancer since the charity was formed and we’re determined to carry on. Funding these centres of excellence is one of the charity's priorities and will enable us to work towards the goals we have set to improve the treatment and survival of cancer patients. But we continue to welcome the generous donations we receive from the public to ensure we can continue to build on what we have started today."

The Top 10 anti-cancer foods

The most powerful anti-cancer food of all is, of course, a daily helping of seafood - for the complete range of the 72+ natural trace elements, without which we cannot help but sicken - and worse.

The complete natural range of the 72 trace elements is the best anti-cancer food there is. This is the reason why the breast cancer rate is 21 times lower, the lung cancer rate is 36 times lower, the prostate cancer rate is 137 time lower, and the colon cancer rate 187 times lower among the Sinhalese, and most likely, the people of India as well. Unlike Sri Lanka, India does not have a public health care system, hence the lack of figures for India.

Nevertheless, the nutritional customs are all but identical in these two countries, and while some Indian agriculture has switched to the trace element deficient Western chemical methods, much of their agriculture still returns all life wastes to the soil - and with them, the 72 trace elements. And China is not far behind the Sinhalese, with basically the same agricultural situation.

So, since seafood is the only readily available food hereabouts which still contains the complete natural range of the 72 nutritional elements, a daily helping of seafood is your most powerful and most effective weapon against cancer.

Here then are the other 9 top anti-cancer foods.

Tomatoes. Besides loads of vitamin C, tomatoes are one of the richest sources of the flavenoid lycopene - which gives them their red colour - which has shown to defend, in study after study, against cancers of the lungs, cervix, prostate and mouth. Tomatoes are also one of the chief ingredients of "the Mediterranean diet", now well known for the many important health benefits it conveys.

Blueberries. In addition to plenty of flavenoids - the rich pigment of the berries - which has repeatedly shown to protect against several cancers, blueberries may also hold "the secret of youth". In a study published in Journal of Neuroscience, investigators found that elderly rats fed the human equivalent of at least 1/2 cup of blueberries per day, improved in balance, coordination and short term memory. A normal serving consists of one cup. Like other fruits and vegetables - and particularly so the 'dark' ones - blueberries contain chemicals that act as antioxidants, now believed by scientists to protect the body against "oxidative stress," one of several biological processes that cause aging.

Red Cabbage, Red Beets. All cabbages - including their kin broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts bok choy, and so forth - are not only rich in calcium, but recent research has shown that they are also extremely rich in anti-cancer flavenoids, the source of the purple colour of the red cabbages. But the red cabbage tops them all; it is the richest source of flavenoids among all vegetables, besides red beets, of course. Red beets have so much of these flavenoids that it can alarm people who are not used to them, because it turns urine red. But there is no reason to panic, it's just the abundance of the potent flavenoids in red beets.

Spinach. Also one of the "dark" vegetables, spinach is also a rich source of vitamin C, beta-carotene - both are potent antioxidants - as well as folic acid, now discovered to be so vital to our health that the US Dept. of Health has mandated that it is added to flour. In several studies (University of Minnesota, Environmental Health Services, and others), it has been found that people who include two or more servings of spinach per week in their nutrition have considerably lower lung and breast cancer rates.

Garlic. Studies focused on garlic have shown, again and again, that this pungent onion kin lives up to its age-old reputation of being a powerful all-around health promoting food. The sulphur compounds that give it its strong flavour have now been shown to protect against cancer by neutralizing carcinogens and slowing tumor growth. In a recent Iowa Women's Health study, investigators found that women who consume garlic at least once a week also have a 32% lower incidence of breast cancer. Garlic is, of course, also a major ingredient in the now well known "Mediterranean diet".

Whole Wheat. In a recent study at the University of Iowa, scientist found that the more whole grain there is in a woman's diet, the lower her risk of breast cancer, as well as heart disease. In this study, as well as an analysis of 40 other studies on 20 kinds of cancer, investigators established that consumers of whole wheat products (bread, pasta, cereals) have a 33% lower risk of these diseases than those who do not eat whole wheat products.

Oranges. Already well known for their high vitamin C content, much recent research in the food sciences has shown that oranges are also rich in many other potent anti-cancer compounds. Investigators have now found that oranges contain more than 170 photochemicals, including more than 20 from the potent carotenoid family alone. In addition, compounds called limonoids - which give citrus fruit their slightly bitter taste - appear to be highly active anti-cancer agents as well. Regular consumption of oranges is associated with significantly lower lung and stomach cancers.

Strawberries. In a study tracking the diet and health of 1.271 people, researchers at the Harvard School of Health found that people who love strawberries have a 70% lower incidence of cancer. But, and as many other studies have shown, the same holds true for all other colourful and deeply coloured berries, such as cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, red and purple grapes, and so forth.

Beans. Much recent research in the food sciences has established that all kinds of beans are loaded with protease inhibitors, compounds that make it hard for cancer cells to invade adjacent tissue. Fava beans contain much herein, which has shown to block carcinogens in the digestive tract. And soy beans are especially rich in isoflavones, which appears to reduce the risk of breast cancer by blocking the tumor-growing influence of estrogen. Lentils also belong to the bean family, and are one of the tastiest, most versatile, and easiest to prepare beans.

General Remarks. In addition to the above, all 'colorful' and deeply coloured fruit and vegetables - and the deeper the colour the better - including carrots, strawberries, red and purple grapes, and so forth - are rich in anti-cancer flavenoids and anti-oxidants. And if you can get them as organically grown - without agricultural poisons - that much the better. This will also eliminate these poison residues from your nutrition. As the example of the whole grains demonstrates, try to stay as close to natural food - as Nature has made it - as possible in your choice of foods. Much that is important, even vital to our health is lost in the 'refining' of food.

Despite dozens of ice-ages, large scale continental changes, massive climate changes, and the total absence of any hygiene of any kind, Life has managed to survive and thrive on this beautiful Earth for the staggering immensity of 4 billion years. And it has done so entirely on natural foods. It is only 150 years ago - a mere blink of an evolutionary eye - that our rather simplistic N-P-K modern agriculture was invented - with, as it now turns out, the disastrous consequences of many cancers and many other 'incurable' deadly physiological and mental diseases. Meanwhile, in all those 'undeveloped' nations which still practice a traditional 72 trace element agriculture (see "THE NATURAL CYCLE" in these pages), cancer and all the other terrrible and macabre physiological and mental diseases which plague us now are either extremely rare, or practically unknown. And this despite the absence of refrigeration and hygiene. The rate of dementia including Alzheimer's, for instance, stands at 1% of the population in Japan whereas it is 11% here, and some say 14% because of the as yet unrecognized portion of the incidence of dementia. Meanwhile, breast cancer rates continue to rise here - including a 24% increase in male breast cancer, which once was unheard of, within the last two decades.

The truth is, and if one comes right down to it, we are being murdered by the millions (deaths due to breast, colon, prostate, thyroid, lung and many other cancers, leukemia, ALS, MS, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, cardiovascular and many other degenerative diseases), and physically and mentally disabled and tortured (bi-polar disorder, ADD, ADHD, arthritis, osteoporosis, ect. ect.) by our daily food. And even our organic food - although vastly preferable to our chemically grown food - is also severely deficient in the 72 natural nutritional trace elements.

For now, and until our modern agriculture replenishes the complete natural range of the 72 trace elements in its soils, and hence in all of its products, a daily serving of seafood is our only readily available source of the 72 natural trace elements - and our most potent weapon against cancer.

FROM MY HUSBAND ALLAN (His Story )

I was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkins Lymphoma. I went through eight months of chemotherapy, I was a good cancer patient…no, a great cancer patient. I was tough. I didn’t curl up in a ball and hide, I faced it, I sucked it up, and got through it. I’m not looking for a medal, I just want to preface what I am going to say with the fact that I am not whiney or self-pitying, and that I realize that I am not the only one who’s had to deal with this , and that there’s worse things that could have happened to me. I have a wonderful family and caring friends that have formed a very lovely support system for me. I cannot thank them enough for all their help and love.

That said, here’s my rant…This goes out to everyone I know – friends, family, co-workers, doctors, nurses, radiologists, technicians, friends of friends, and others…

1. There is no “good” kind of cancer. Yes, this kind of cancer at my stage has an 80-85% survival rate. That’s great, I am happy about that – really, I am, but that doesn’t make it “good” or any “better” than any other kind of cancer. Cancer is a scary thing, the treatment is excruciating, and at the end of the day, if you happen to get “lucky” and be one of the 15-20% that don’t survive, that statistic turns from a “good” one to a not-so-great one. Really. That’s like one out of five. Can you think of five friends? Picture them. If one of them up and died would you consider it a “good” number of them? I didn’t think so. So please, don’t tell me I got the “good” kind of cancer – don’t even suggest it. Don’t even say, “Well, at least you didn’t get cancer, that would really suck.” Uh, hello, this pretty much REALLY sucks. Next time you get cancer I’ll ask you if you think the kind you got is “good”.

2. Don’t tell me things I don’t want to hear. For some reason, it occurred several times that when I told someone what I was going through (which is kinda awkward anyway), they would say something to the effect of “OH, my (mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, insert any other relative or even remote acquaintance here) just died last year of cancer.” Or “Right, my (insert distant relative here) died of Hodgkin’s.” What is that all about ?? I have been diagnosed with a terrible disease and am undergoing intensive and debilitating treatment, and you’re going to tell me about someone dying? What? Seriously? It’s better just to not chime in here. Again, next time you get cancer, I’ll try this line out on you and you can let me know what you think.

3. DO NOT ask me about my hair. With the kind of chemo I had, my hair started falling out around treatment #3, slowly at first, then lots at a time until I finally, and very sadly, shaved my head. THAT WAS REALLY HARD TO DO. It’s about a lot of things…it’s about vanity and feeling ugly, it’s about the stigma of being sick and that being obvious to the world, it’s about knowing or not who you are without your hair/eyelashes/eyebrows, it’s complicated. And, I take ownership of the fact that some of that is really superficial – but it’s very real and it’s emotional. So, comments like “How’s your hair doing?” “Wow, it’s really thinning out!” “So is your hair just coming out in handfuls?” and “Is that a wig?” are not helpful and WILL make me cry. If you think this is stupid or oversensitive, let me say it again: next time you get cancer let me know how this goes.

4. Don’t tell me it’s going to be ok. Bottom line is this – I know I want everything to be ok, and I know you want everything to be ok – you wouldn’t be my friend/involved family member if that weren’t the case. Unfortunately, we BOTH know that it just might not be ok. We BOTH know that there exists the possibility that it’s not going to be ok and that the disease isn’t going to respond, or is going to come back, and that even if I am tough and brave, it could kill me. I have had to deal with that idea since the word “cancer” came out of the doctor’s mouth. In that moment, and in the hours and days to come, I knew that it could happen that everything was not going to be ok. If I didn’t know that, cancer wouldn’t be such a big deal. If that weren’t a possibility, we wouldn’t have shed tears when we heard the news. So, for my sake, don’t say that line. I know it’s the first thing that comes to mind, and I know you mean it well, but try something else that actually means something, like: “Whenever you need anything I’ll be there” or “This is going to be rough but I’m here for you” or “I’m on my way over with a last season’s Top Model” or even just “i will support you through everything, ”. I know you may not get it, but next time you get cancer we’ll share profound understanding when I tell you that I know it may not be ok and that I know that’s real scary.

5. Don’t comment about my weight. Ok, here’s something that I didn’t know before I started this. Chemotherapy is NOT a weight loss plan – YES, they have indeed discontinued all the fringe benefits from the cancer card membership. Turns out, they give you steroids that make you hungry all the time. And, you feel terrible a lot of the time and don’t even have enough energy to walk up the stairs, much less to exercise. In the beginning when I was still trying to figure out how to deal with horrid side effects like constant vomiting, painful mouth sores, etc, I lost weight because I just literally couldn’t eat. But once I got that under control, the hunger would come on, and man, I can eat a lot. I was in pretty good shape (at the gym five days a week, healthy foods, etc) when all this started and now I have gained weight and am up a pants size. The once-muscle has turned into mushy fat and I’m not happy about it, but during treatment there was just no fix. So, the “wow, you’ve put a couple on, haven’t you?” or “I thought you lose weight on chemo” comments are not helpful and again, will make me cry. Next time you get cancer, see how you feel when I tell you to “hit the gym.”

6. Chemotherapy sucks. I think everyone knows that – I don’t know what the first thing is that pops into your head when you read that word, but I would venture to guess that it’s not something warm and smiley. It sucks, it really sucks. You vomit, are nauseated (which is so much worse than vomiting) all the time, you get terrible headaches, you can’t sleep, you get sores in your mouth and chronic yeast infections, you get seriously, seriously constipated, your brain malfunctions and you can’t remember how to get to the bus stop or where you normally leave the toothpaste, your whole body hurts, your toenails fall off ( Yeah) and now they give you shots to stimulate white blood cell production (at least in my case) that cause relentless, incapacitating pain that made you simply want to give up on living just to make it stop. Ok, I said it, chemotherapy sucks – and I am really good at being tough and not letting everyone know all the horrible stuff that’s happening to me at once, but you know it sucks. So, no, I am not interested in hearing you whine about a cold you think you’re getting, your scratchy throat, your eye/ear/sinus infection, your sleepiness, your headache, etc. I know you really don’t feel good, but c’mon man, suck it up – or at least go tell someone else who doesn’t have cancer. Next time you get it, you’ll ignore the person that spends ten minutes talking about how bad their hangover is.

7. It’s a REALLY long road. Eight months is a long time to be sick. It just is, and I KNOW (I really know) that it gets old. In the beginning everyone called all the time, offered to go to chemo with me, sent lots of e-mails, came over to visit when I was sick….but after the months drag on it’s like people get sick of it. I understand that – ‘cause I got pretty sick of it too. I got sick of calling in to work, not doing anything fun, not seeing anyone….even just answering the “How are you feeling?” question….I felt like it was better to lie and say “fine” than to say how I really felt because people kind of don’t know how to react or don’t want to hear it. I have a wonderful Wife and Kids who took exceptional care of me, even when they needed a break, even when it got old, even when they got sick of hearing me say I felt really ill. They did that because they knew I needed them. I needed other people too, I needed friends to just come over with a movie or a DVD of a funny TV show, or to call me on the days they knew I had treatment, or to just call when they hadn’t heard from me in days. Some did and some didn’t. You know who you are and why you didn’t. Maybe you didn’t feel comfortable or maybe you were too “busy.” Regardless, I love you, and I will do it for you the next time you get cancer.

I really, really hope you never get cancer. I mean that for everyone – even if you’re a jerk, even if you write to me and rant meaningless rubbish about my rant, even if you really deserve to have something nasty happen to you – I hope you don’t get cancer. It’s awful. I’m not one of those “I’m a survivor!” types, I’m not one of those in-your-face super tough post-cancer freaks, I’m really normal and I will get over this. That said, if you do get cancer or if your friend or (insert any relative here) gets cancer, you can bet your bottom dollar that if/when I hear about it I’ll be on your/their doorstep with a big teary welcome to the cancer club hug and a mop and bucket to clean the floors, or popcorn and aDVD for the kids, or dinner so you/they don’t have to make it, or whatever it takes, for as long as it takes – and you won’t have to ask for it, and you won’t have to say thanks, because we’ll both just know. It’s a special club and we take care of our own.

LOTS OF LOVE, ALLAN XX

Asparagus/Cancer -Must Read, GOT THIS FROM A FRIEND

Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer.. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article, entitled, `Asparagus for cancer ' printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979.

I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: ' I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 5 years.

Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R.Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories..
Here are a few examples:
Case No. 1,
A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin ' s disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise.

Case No. 2,

A successful businessman 68 years old who suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years. After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he went on asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.

Case No. 3,

A man who had lung cancer. On March 5th 1971, he was put on the operating table where they found lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable. The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it. By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. He is back at his regular business routine. *
*Case No. 4,
A woman who was troubled for a number of years with skin cancer. She finally developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by asking specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after starting on asparagus, her skin specialist said that her skin looked fine and no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus .
I was not surprised at this result, as `The Elements of Material Medica, ' edited in 1854 by a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania , stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones.

We would have other case histories but the medical establishment has interfered with our obtaining some of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy. For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before using, and therefore canned asparagus is just as good as fresh.

I have corresponded with the two leading canners of asparagus, Giant Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands contain no pesticides or preservatives.

* * PROCEDURE:
1) Place the cooked asparagus in a blender and liquefy to make a puree, and store in the refrigerator.

2) Give the patient 4 full tablespoons twice daily, morning and evening .
Patients usually show some improvement in from 2-4 weeks. It can be diluted with water and used as a cold or hot drink. This suggested dosage is based on present experience, but certainly larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in some cases.

As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that `what cures can prevent. ' Based on this theory, my wife and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage with our meals. We take 2 tablespoons diluted in water to suit our taste wit breakfast and with dinner. I take mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold.
For years we have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as part of our regular checkups.

The last blood survey, taken=2 0 by a medical doctor who specializes in the nutritional approach to health, showed substantial improvements in all categories over the last one, and we can attribute these improvements to nothing but the asparagus drink...

As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer. Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones, which are believed to be active in controlling cell growth. For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth normalizer. That accounts for its action on cancer and inacting as a general body tonic. In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest, is a harmless substance.

The FDA cannot prevent you from using it and it may do you much good.. It has been reported by the US National Cancer Institute, that asparagus is the highest tested food containing glutathione, which is considered one of the body ' s most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.

Please spread the news...
...the most unselfish act one can ever do is paying forward all the kindness one has
received even to the most undeserved person*

Doctors Double As Rock Stars To Help Raise Cancer Awareness

A group of doctors are trying to raise awareness about cancer in the operating room and on stage. NY1's Kafi Drexel filed the following report.
Dr. Nimesh Nagarsheth of Mt. Sinai Medical Center is a busy women's cancer doctor by day, but take away the white lab coat and you have a rock star.

Nagarsheth and five other doctors from around the country are all skilled surgeons in the field of gynecologic oncology. But while they're on the frontline against women's cancers in the operating room, they're also fighting to raise awareness through their band N.E.D, which stands for "No Evidence of Disease" – a state they aim to get all of their patients to.

The group formed to entertain other doctors at the Society of Gynecological Oncology's annual conference this year. And, like any classic "out-of-the box" rock story, they now have a record deal.

"It's a dream come true in the sense that all of us have been talking about this since we were little kids, and we've actually commented on that," he says.

Signed with New York City-based Motema Records and with the support of the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, much of the group's original music deals with themes in the fight against cancer.

Co-lead singer, Dr. John Boggess is a surgeon at UNC-Chapel Hill.

"We think that people need to understand about these diseases and the women who have them," says Boggess. "So anything that we can do outside of the surgery we do every day in the operating room and in the clinic, we find to be an incredible privilege."

It may be hard for some people to envision their surgeons as potential rock stars. But this group says they don't really think it's much of a stretch to switch from scalpel to guitar pick.

"I really strongly believe that music does reflect what happens in life and what happens in life is reflected in music," says Nagarsheth. "And we have a strong understanding of each of those, so we can really help each other in both of those categories."

One of Nagasheth's patients, Samantha Hill, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at young age, says finding our her doctor is a rocker on the side wasn't much of a stretch for her – and she hopes N.E.D's message gets across.

"You're 35 years old and you hear that you have cancer, and you're in shock," she recalls. "I felt that he could relate and I think music is a very important tool. And I think that specifically, ovarian cancer, there's not much awareness and it's really a silent killer."

The N.E.D album is set for release next fall.

CHAPEL HILL -- A rock 'n' roll fantasy is coming true for two surgeons at UNC Hospitals.

Drs. John Boggess and John Soper, who specialize in female reproductive cancers, are members of a six-person rock band that has signed a record deal with a small New York music label and is working with one of David Bowie's former producers to create an album.

The group, called N.E.D, for No Evidence of Disease, started a little over a year ago as a lark to spice up a scientific meeting. Now the members are scheduled to release a collection of original songs this fall, with proceeds benefiting gynecological cancer causes.

For the doctors, the fulfillment of their dream would be to sell a lot of discs -- not so they can buy fast cars and romp with supermodels, but to raise needed money and awareness for devastating diseases they say get little attention.

"Do you ever see the words gynecologic oncology in print?" asked Boggess. The specialty treats cervical, ovarian and vaginal cancers, which afflicted an estimated 78,490 women in the United States last year. Compared with breast cancer, which hit 182,460 U.S. women last year and raises millions of dollars in research money, Boggess said the gynecological cancers are often overlooked.

The band, he and Soper said, could change that. In addition to winning the record contract, the group has been invited to appear on daytime talk TV, "The Bonnie Hunt Show," and is discussing appearances on the "The Early Show" and "Good Morning America." They're gunning for an audience with Oprah.

It's a long way from their roots. The doctors -- two others are from New York, one from Portland, Ore., and another from Amarillo, Texas -- were patched together, Monkees-like, by a colleague who was arranging entertainment for an annual meeting of cancer doctors. Aside from Soper and Boggess, the band mates had never met, much less played together. They rehearsed one night, and performed the next -- an hour's worth of classic rock covers.

The goal, as Soper put it, "was to not suck."

That much was achieved.

"Everybody went crazy," said Marsha Wilson, communications director for the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, the advocacy group that will benefit from the band's sales. "They were really good."

Old-school rockers

Most of the band members had played in groups during their younger days. Soper, who is in his mid 50s, played in bands in high school and college, and as an adult was a member of a local bluegrass group called Piney Mountain Boys, which split up in 1989 when the guy who owned the sound system moved away. While in medical school in Oregon, Boggess played in a band with other med students in the 1980s, earning steady rent money and a small following. But he gave up musical pursuits to practice medicine.

It didn't take much cajoling to get the surgeons back in form. They played for another science gathering a few months after their debut, to equally rousing ovations, and were then encouraged to write their own songs based on their experiences and observations treating cancer patients.

They came up with more than 20, and whittled the song list to about 10. Signed by Motema, a small label that generally features jazz musicians, the band will record its album in New York in April. They're working with a musical coach to sharpen their sound.

"I responded to their writing and the fact that they put their life experiences in their music and that they were trying to make the world a better place," said Jana Herzen, founder and president of Motema. "I think of music as food for the soul, and the doctors really are coming from this place."

Next week, the group returns to its origins and plays at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, in San Antonio. After a full day of presentations about sentinel node biopsies and chemo-response assays, just about anything with a back beat might offer relief. But N.E.D. aims to be more than background noise, and in the process, give voice to illnesses that have for too long been quiet killers.

LIVING WITH CANCER

My husband Allan was diagnosed with a lymphoma 14 years ago,

I'm lucky in the sense that my husband is still with me 14 years on and is feeling fine so far and now only attending the hospital once per year as a safety net.
We have been on the other end as both his parents died of cancer, his mother at an early age, which was hard as she never saw the grandchildren that came along.
Cancer not only effects the person that is unfortunate to contract it, but it effects all the family around as well. My children were in their teens and still they had a hard job coming to terms with the fact that they may loose their dad at again an early age. We were all strong for each other giving support when needed, and also my husband who was the one going through it, was a tremondous support to all of us. He would tell us to go about things on a daily basis as per usual and not to think of him having cancer.
He had a lymphoma, which was a large growth at the top of his leg. He underwent surgery for them to say that it was cancer which in turn made things difficult, as when they decided to start chemotherapy immediately he had a large cut with stitches across the length of the lump on his leg.
Once the chemo had started he then had lilttle or no immune system so therefore this scar, trying to heal was taking a long time and we had to be extra careful that he did not get any infection.
Thankfully the chemotherapy worked and just to be extra sure he had an intensive burst of radiotherapy which was daily for 2 weeks. It was a long hard fight, but you just have to get on

with it, you dont have a choice.
I know that it is hard to go to the doctors for that first visit, fear of knowing that you may have that dreaded cancer, but please be brave, my husband is proof that if caught in time you can get your life back. It was a long haul and a strain for all but now i still have him here, the kids still have their dad, and my husband has now 2 grandchildren that he adores, that he thought at one point he might never see.
Support each other and stay positive, we wish anyone out there who is suffering our best wishes and we hope that it all goes well for anyone concerned. Our thoughts are with you all..
